Job description

Principal, Corporate Actuarial

Principal, Corporate Actuarial

Root was founded on the belief that car insurance is broken, and we set out to change it. We’re harnessing the power of technology to revolutionize this archaic, complicated industry. Using machine learning and mobile telematic platforms, we’ve built one of the most innovative insurtech companies in the world.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a technically strong, hands-on actuarial leader to join our Corporate Actuarial team. The Principal will provide significant support in capital modeling, enterprise risk management (ERM), reinsurance, and reserving activities. The ideal candidate is an ACAS or recent FCAS with strong programming skills and a collaborative mindset, who thrives in a dynamic, high-impact environment.

Salary Range: $175,000 - $200,000 (Eligible for competitive bonus and equity offering)

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

How You Will Make an Impact

  1. Develop, enhance, and use internal capital models to inform risk appetite, reinsurance decisions, and financial strategy.
  2. Contribute to stress testing, ORSA scenario development, and economic capital modeling efforts.
  3. Help implement and refine ERM frameworks, risk registers, and related processes across the organization.
  4. Conduct analysis to support the evaluation and placement of reinsurance structures, including but not necessarily limited to quota share, excess of loss (XOL), and catastrophe (CAT) arrangements.
  5. Collaborate with brokers and internal teams to assess the financial impact and capital benefits of various reinsurance options.
  6. Model the impact of reinsurance structures on earnings volatility, surplus preservation, and RBC.
  7. Partner with Corporate Actuarial teammates to conduct monthly reserving analyses and processes as needed.
  8. Analyze trends, variances, and reserve adequacy across multiple lines of business and coverages.
  9. Assist with regulatory filings and support the appointed actuary as needed.
  10. Work closely with, and drive engagement from, cross-functional partners in Data Science, Finance, Accounting, Underwriting, and Claims to align assumptions, methodologies, and strategic objectives.
  11. Present technical findings clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  12. Contribute to process automation, analytics, and actuarial tool development (including work in R, Python, SQL, GenAI and internal platforms).

What You Will Need to Succeed

  1. Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or another field with a rigorous mathematics background preferred
  2. ACAS or FCAS
  3. 6+ years of actuarial experience in the P&C insurance space, preferably with exposure to capital modeling, ERM, reinsurance, and/or reserving.
  4. Proficiency in R or Python, SQL, and GenAI tools.
  5. Familiarity with capital modeling tools; experience with custom modeling is a plus.
  6. Experience collaborating across functional areas and communicating actuarial insights effectively.
  7. A self-starter mindset with strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  8. Willingness to mentor junior team members and/or manage direct reports as needed.
  9. Occasional travel may be required for team meetings, broker discussions, or industry events

As part of Root’s interview process, we kindly ask that all candidates be on camera for virtual interviews. This helps us create a more personal and engaging experience for both you and our interviewers. Being on camera is a standard requirement for our process and part of how we assess fit and communication style, so we do require it to move forward with any applicant’s candidacy. If you have any concerns, feel free to let us know once you are contacted. We’re happy to talk it through.
